Chelsea is one of the biggest teams in the English Premier League. Frank Lampard, John Terry, Joe Cole, Dennis Wise, Didier Drogba and many other legends have played for Chelsea. Just like regular Premier League teams, Chelsea have also had a number of English players. But in this, an unusual feature from other teams can be seen when examining the history of Chelsea. That is, at the end of each season, Chelsea have a tradition of choosing the player of the season.
However, if we look at the 10-year history from 2011 to 2020, it can be seen that not a single England player has won Chelsea’s Player of the Year award. In 2011, Chelsea’s legendary goalkeeper Petr Cech was named Chelsea’s Player of the Year. This was the Czech Republic goalkeeper’s first Chelsea Player of the Year award. Later in 2012 and 2013, the Spanish attacking fielder Juan Mata was selected as the Chelsea player of the year.
Later, in 2014 and 2015, Belgium winger Eden Hazard received Chelsea’s Player of the Year nod. Later, Brazilian winger Willian won Chelsea’s player of the year in 2016. It is also noteworthy that many English players have played for the Chelsea team. However, again in 2017, Belgium Winger Eden Hazard was selected as the Chelsea Player of the Year. This was his third Player of the Year award.
In 2018, French midfielder N’Golo Kante won Chelsea’s player of the year award. In 2019, Belgium winger Eden Hazard won his fourth Chelsea Player of the Year award. Later, Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic won Chelsea’s Player of the Year award in 2020. Finally, after a gap of 11 years, an England player will win the Chelsea Player of the Year award in 2021. English attacking midfielder Mason Mount has been named Chelsea’s player of the year for 2021 and 2022.
